ICHCI 2016 

Department of CSE/IT & ECE ,Saveetha School of Engineering, Saveetha University conducted a two day’s Second International  Conference on Human Computer Interactions (‘ICHCI-2016’) at Universities Thandalam campus  on 10^th and 11^th march 2016.

 The advancements of Human Computer Interaction have led to this global event, with the continuation of ICHCI’13. This conference illuminated about the latest trends of Human Computer Interactions by renowned  Scientists, Academicians, Research Scholars, Industry professionals and the students across the globe.

The conference started with  inaugural function led by His Excellency Dr. N.M. Veeraiyan, Founder and Chancellor of Saveetha University, Dr. Liu Yun-hui, Professor, Mechanical and Automation Engineering, University of Hong Kong, Dr David Jenkins, Professor in Electronics and Mathematics, Plymouth University, UK,  Mrs. Ramya Deepak, Director, Saveetha School of Engineering  , Dr. P. Shankar, Principal SSE , Dr. D. Dhanasekaran Convener and Dr.P. C. Kishore Raja Co-convener.

Dr. N.M. Veeraiyan and Prof. Liu Yun- hui released the conference proceedings ICHCI -2016, followed by series of  invited talks by eminent professionals.

A Memorandum of Understanding was done with Intel lab for setting up center of excellence labs  on IOT and embedded systems at SSE.The first key note address on “Surgical Robots” by Dr. Liu Yun-hui, Professor, University of Hong Kong was held at Kurinji Hall .

The first technical Session  on “Human Computer Interaction” was delivered  by  Dr. Swaminathan, Associate professor, Academician, Anna University,  Mr. Sivarajan Nepolean, Industrialist Director -Engineering Channellive, , and  Mr. Venkateshwaran, Researcher in Multicoreware.

The Second key note address on “Human – Robot Interaction” was delivered by Professor David Jenkins, Plymouth University UK , held at seminar Hall SSE  .

The Second Technical Session  on “Augmented Reality” led by Academician Dr. Bhaskaran,  Anna University, Industrialist Mr. Sukumar Subramanian,  MD, Accel Animation and  Researcher, Mr. Mukesh, Vice-President, E-Noah Solutions.Parallel sessions were held on Paper and poster presentations  by  participants from India and abroad.

The second day started with third  keynote address  on “Artificial Intelligence”  delivered by Dr. Nor Ashidi Mat Isa, Professor, University of Sains, Malasiya, followed by third technical session on “Internet of Things (IoT)” by the  distinguished  persons Dr. Bagayaveni, Professor, College of Engineering, Anna University  Mr. T. Rangarajan, TCS,  and Prof. Prithiviraj ,REC.

Fourth key note session on “Embedded Systems” was delivered by Dr. Suresh Sundaram, NTU, Singapore , followed by fourth technical session on “Sensors” by Mrs. L.K. Hema, AVIT, Mr. Kalaiselvan, Deputy GM, TATA Communications and Dr. Nirmala Grace, VIT, Vellore. 

We received around 1099 research articles across the globe. The Review Committee scrutinized the papers based on  technical depth and originality and selected 135 papers for presentation. To mention a few, we have received manuscripts from ,Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, University of  Teknologi MALAYSIA, BITS Pilani, Dubai , Ulster University, U K,  Hohai University, China.

The event folded with valedictory function presided by Mr.S.Bhanu Kumar, Director WinVinaya info systems, Dr.Suresh Sundaram, NTU, Singapore, Mrs. Ramya Deepak, Director,Saveetha School of Engineering  , Dr. P. Shankar, Principal SSE, Dr. D. Dhanasekaran Convener and Dr.P. C. Kishore Raja Co-convener. Report on ICHCI -2016 was read by Mrs.Anusuya, Associate Professor ,SSE. Best papers and best poster presentations were awarded to the participants. Feed back from the participants added more honour for the conference -ICHCI 2016. Saveetha School of Engineering  Director Mrs.Ramya Deepak delivered the vote of thanks. With the grace of Lord Almighty the entire event ended successfully.

Chennai: Saveetha Dental college is conducting PG-STAR Summit(Postgraduate Saveetha Transdisciplinary Annual Research Summit and 10th International BDS Students Seminar of Basic Medical Science on 9th January 2016 at M M Convention Centre,Saveetha Dental College, Poonamallee High Road, Chennai.

University Grants Commission Vice Chairman Prof.Dr.H.Devaraj will be the Chief Guest.
Research with a mind for the future direction towards diagnosis and therapeutics forms a pivot for the evolution and enhancement of the health care front. Synchronizing with this thought, Saveetha Dental College has embarked on a research platform which is the first of its kind amongst any educational institution in India.

The STAR Summit is the first of its kind among dental colleges in the country where
in the postgraduates present their five research projects across all the disciplines
of dentistry. Such a forum would provide them a very good research platform.
At Saveetha Dental College, research is an integral part of the curriculum. Research is initiated,
formulated, motivated, propagated and published. Every postgraduate student submits five short
term research projects to the Scientific Review Board. Every project is scrutinised and sanctioned
by the Scientific Review Board which is then periodically monitored until completion. On completion,
the students present their research during the two days in STAR Summit which spans topics across
all the disciplines of dentistry. The work will be assessed by judges who are eminent people in
their fields and also appraised by peer judges from other Institutions.

A proud full response of MILA.
The innovative teaching system- MILA (Multiple Interactive Learning Algorithm) – a Saveetha University intiative, the brainchild of Dr.Deepak Nallaswamy, Director of Academics, Saveetha University, was briefed upon to '$1 million TED Prize winner Professor Sugata Mitra, Professor of  Newcastle University, UK' ,along with The British Council team members in a luncheon session, in the presence of University vice chancellor Dr.R.Rajagopal on 11 th september2015, by Dr.Pratibha Ramani, Asst Dean of Research , Saveetha Dental College. They were very receptive and responsive and eager to know more about the system and the discussion turned out to be a fruitful one as it was well received and applauded by the guests.

The inaugural talk of this series was delivered at Saveetha University in Chennai today by eminent
Professor Sugata Mitra on ‘The Future of Learning’. TED Prize winner Professor Mitra’s
experiments inspired the Indian Diplomat, Vikas Swarup, to write his debut novel that went on to
become the Oscar-winning film of 2009 - Slumdog Millionaire. This multi-city initiative will also be
organised in New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata with other inspiring UK alumni over the next few
months.
Speaking at the launch, Mei-kwei Barker, Director South India, British Council said, “We are very
grateful to Professor Sugata Mitra who accepted our request to give the inaugural lecture in the
GREAT Talk series. There could not have been a more befitting start to this unique initiative we are
launching today. The lecture was attended by over 1000 students and professors today and we are
certain that upcoming lectures in the series will receive a similar response!”
Professor Sugata Mitra, Professor of Educational Technology, The School of Education,
Communication and Language Sciences at Newcastle University, UK said, “THE GREAT TALK
is a delightful initiative by the British Council to engage, encourage and inspire young students. My
talk today was focused on understanding how can we better prepare our children for the future. We
need to design a futuristic learning methodology, which facilitates children to embark on intellectual
adventures driven by big questions. In 2006, Newcastle University, UK gave me the opportunity to
help improve schooling across the globe and provided me with the support I needed for holistic
research. Indeed, the UK welcomes the brightest and best international students at the world-class
universities. I believe the UK Education offers students a sea of opportunities who are looking to make
a mark for themselves.”

During his talk, Professor Sugata Mitra, shared his decade long journey that resulted in the building of
‘School in the Cloud’. He began his talk discussing the events that led to the ‘Hole in the Wall’
(HIWEL) experiment. In 1999, he embedded a computer within a wall in an Indian slum at Delhi for
children to use freely. The experiment aimed at proving that children could be taught computers very
easily without any formal training. He termed this as Minimally Invasive Education (MIE). The
experiment has since been repeated at many places and has left a mark on popular culture
Further in the talk, Professor Mitra took the audience through his thirteen years of experiments in
children's education, which brought forward a series of startling results, such as, children can self-
organise their own learning; they can achieve educational objectives on their own and can read by
themselves. Finally, he spoke about the most startling result of them all: groups of children with
access to internet can learn anything by themselves.Using the TED Prize, Professor Mitra has now built seven ‘Schools in the Cloud’, the glimpses of
which were provided in the talk.

Chancellor Dr. N.M.Veeraiyan, in his presidential address wished the fresher’s for better and bright future and he thanked the parents who have chosen this institution.  He advised the students to follow the rules and regulations of the institution as those are meant for the benefit of the students.  He requested the parents to update with the academic progress of their wards.

The Chief Guest Prof. Dr. R. Venkata Rao congratulated the students and he stated that “Saveetha University believes in innovation and not in renovation”.  He shared his personal experience with the students about the  Former President Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam as a tribute to him.  He thanked the parents for taking responsibility in building the career of their children.  He stressed the importance of 3M’s namely Biological Mother, Mother Institution, Mother India.  He quoted that “Constitution is to be considered as the only holy book for all legal professionals” and he added that “Permanent values are more important than temporary values”.  He emphasised that an advocate should respect values by quoting that, “How Can You Love God, Whom You Cannot See, When You Cannot Love the Human Being, Whom You See”.  He eyes over a Million law graduates by 2020 with better quality and standard. Finally, he showered his blessings to all students.
Director of Academics Dr.Deepak Nallaswamy explained the innovative teaching methodology adopted by our university.  The learning process carried out in Saveetha University has a varied activity based learning which includes multiple interactive learning algorithm, case study learning, group learning, problem based learning, journal discussion, extended learning etc., he concluded that the aim of every institution in the universe is to produce successful professionals.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. R.Rajagopal explained the history and facilities of Saveetha University.  Further he stated that “Good habits are the seeds of better life and bad habits are the seeds of sorrow”.  He said students to choose good friends and cultivate good habits.

Chennai: Saveetha Transdisciplinary Annual Research Summit(Star Summit-2015)was inaugurated here on ( 29 th June)today by Dr.N M Veeraiyan,Chancellor,Saveetha University at Decennial hall,Saveetha Dental College .Sri Ramachandra University Dean of research Prof.Dr.S.P.Thyagarajan was the chief guest.Dr.N.M.Veeraiyan, Founder President and Chancellor of Saveetha University presided over the function.
The STAR summit spans over a period of 12 days from 29th June 2015 to 11th July 2015 where in over 1400 research projects of our undergraduate students will be showcased, among them 53 papers have been accepted to be published for the month of May.  STAR summit will have 4 days dedicated
exclusively for basic medical sciences, two days for preclinical research work and six days for clinical research. What other place would be more apt to display these projects than the library where the thinking caps go on our student’s brains. Our ever buzzing library will progress a step ahead and become a scholarly apiary for those 12 days.  The students’ work will be reviewed and appraised by other students, their peers from other colleges and also from eminent faculties in each fraternity. Gone are the days where
a research has to percolate through many barriers to reach their pedestal, here we are offering a priceless platform for our students to reach out and extend our arms to the scientific globe around us.

Chennai:Mr Manikanda Mane from Saveetha University,won a prestigious“Best Use of Resources Prize 2015" of Plymouth University,UK.This was based on the assessment by experts during the Project open day held at Plymouth.The award carries a cash prize of Rs.10,000 and citation.

Final Year ECE student of Saveetha School of Engineering Manikanda have got an opportunity to pursue the final Semester at Plymouth,UK.He got a lot of exposure through this one “Semester Abroad Program (SAP).

Manikanda done initial stage of bench work in Saveetha School of Engineering where he devolved the Graphene Films and to take it a further collaboration have done more thinner Graphene Films in Plymouth University which can be used in “Intra Ocular Pressure Sensors”.

Novel research brings ‘vision’ engineering in focus

In what can be seen as giving a boost to research efforts, a student from Saveetha School of Engineering has developed micro-thin grapheme films in collaboration with the UK-based Plymouth University that can be used in ‘Intra Ocular Pressure Sensors. ‘For Saveetha School of Engineering student Manikanda Mane, qualifying for the ‘Semester Abroad Program’ was a dream come true. It was a perfect platform for the student, who is pursuing Electronics and Communication at Saveetha. In his final semester, his research effort won him accolades from the collaborator Plymouth University, with whom Saveetha has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

Guided by Prof A Deepak of Saveetha and Dr P Shankar, Saveetha’s College of Engineering Principal, Manikanda had earlier produced a thicker version of the grapheme film that is capable of wider applications, especially in the field of bio medical engineering. A visit by Plymouth University’s Dr David Jenkins in 2012 was the starting point of the Indo-UK collaboration. Seeing the potential in the research efforts of Manikanda, Dr Jenkins felt the need to facilitate an opportunity to partner in research and work together. Pursuing research in right earnest and spurred by the vision of the chancellor, Dr N M Veeraiyan to position Saveetha as a flagship brand on a global platform, Manikanda said he had been interested in using grapheme and CNT-based sensor films while at the university.  

“The reason for choosing this project is due to the wide range of applications that is possible with Graphene. The staff and students in Plymouth University were encouraging and the excellent lab facilities enabled me to complete my research with a positive outcome,” he said on Saturday, when Saveetha University’s tie-up with Plymouth University was announced in Chennai.

One of the key objectives of the collaboration is to use the advanced research characterization facilities in Plymouth to enhance the efficiency of the nano-composite sensors used for intra-ocular pressure measurements and for many other bio-medical sensor applications. The latest MoU with Plymouth will strengthen the cutting-edge research initiatives of the Chennai-based institution, which has forged several collaborative tie-ups with other global universities of repute. As many as 7 students from the School of Engineering qualified for research programs at many premier universities overseas between January and May this year.

“I take immense pleasure in expressing my gratitude to our honorable chancellor, Dr. N.M. Veeraiyan for such a great event. The Press meet held on 20^th June at “Le Royal Meridian” where have been awarded with “Best Use of Resources” at Plymouth University. As an Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) student in Saveetha School of Engineering I have got an opportunity to pursue my final Semester at Plymouth. Where have got a lot of exposure through this one “Semester Abroad Program (SAP)”. The Curriculum which was being practiced in Saveetha University helped me a lot where we got to do the projects right from the first year. This helped me build my practical Knowledge and interested me to do this project from 3^rd year onwards. A great support and encouragement from my Prof. A. Deepak and my Principal Sir Dr. P. Shankar throughout my project. We have done initial stage of bench work in Saveetha School of Engineering where we devolved the Graphene Films and to take it a further collaboration have done more thinner Graphene Films in Plymouth University which can be used in “Intra Ocular Pressure Sensors”.

          “The reason have chosen this project is because as there are wide range of applications with the Graphene which interested me a lot. The staff and students in Plymouth University are warm welcoming and very friendly. Have never got any problem throughout stay in Plymouth. There are excellent lab facilities and staff. My project guide in Plymouth University Prof. Dr. David Jenkins who is great source of encouragement and I should be thankful for this motivation, guidance and valuable suggestions to carry out project so successfully. This led me to win an award in Plymouth University competing all the Students of Plymouth.”
